In 1951, between husbands, Joan Fontaine adopted a five-year-old Peruvian girl, Martita Pareja, whom she had met on a tour of the Andes and whose father was caretaker of Fontaine raised Deborah and Martita side by side, but when Martitas 16th birthday approached, she told Fontaine that she didnt want to go back to Peru.
