The name of the estate was changed to Brightling Park in 1879 when purchased from the Fuller family by Percy Tew. In 1703 he gave the property to his nephew John Fuller (1680-1745) who that year married Elizabeth Rose, a Jamaican heiress who brought a considerable fortune to the family along with estates in the West Indies of over 1215ha.
